This year's event will be held on Friday, May 19th and Saturday May 20, 2017. We are expecting over 40 professional barbecue teams to converge on Valley's Spruce street to compete for $12,000 in prize money. Friday evening there will be a People's Choice competition where some of these same teams will be preparing their favorite sliders and or sides for members of the community to sample and then vote on their favorites. This event is a fundraiser for the Valley Veterans groups and they will be selling tickets for $1 which will be used to pay for your samples at the various locations. For every $5 worth of tickets that you purchase you will be given a ballot that will be used to vote on your favorite(s). At 8:00 pm the ballots will be tabulated and the top three places will be announced at the street dance taking place in front of the Spruce Street Tavern. The street dance will wrap up at 1:00 AM Saturday morning and there won't be any opportunities for public involvement until the Cubs Scouts host a pancake breakfast at 8:00 am Saturday at the intersection of Spruce and Second St.
During the night or early morning hours Saturday, the teams will fire up their pits in preparation to cook their entries for the actual competition. They will turn in their chicken entry at 12:00 noon, their pork ribs at 12:30 pm, their pork entry at 1:00 pm and their beef brisket at 1:30 pm. These entries will be judged by Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) certified judges as they are turned in and an awards ceremony will be held in the shop at City Hall.
